Marco Balich, managing partner and president of Balich Worldwide Shows, believes technology will play a vital role in the opening ceremony and daily shows at Dubai’s upcoming Expo 2020.
Addressing event professionals from across the industry at an event by PRG Gearhouse, Balich said that it is important to understand the theme of the Expo, ‘Connecting Minds, Creating the Future’, and try to use technology to interpret that message.
“My advice is to understand the message of the Expo and then try to look at everything related to it whether its art, theatre or technology and then use these tools to answer that question,” said Balich.
“The Expo works like this - the organising body proposes a message that needs to be interpreted creatively. In Dubai 2020, the message is ‘Connecting Minds’ which essentially means connecting the world. This would require us to find a link between everything and every country be it Brazil, Argentina, Italy or the US.
“All of these participating countries will want ideas about how to build their respective pavilions. They will have national days and a permanent show among other things, so there is a lot to explore,” he added.
Balich also advised industry professionals to use technology wisely.
“Right now everyone is about using drones and second screens, but you need to ask yourself if this is relevant to the theme. Maybe drones won't be very useful in the ‘Connecting Minds’ theme, plus they are noisy and aren't very smart.”
With more than 20 ceremonies across five continents, Balich has over a decade of experience in the industry, having most recently produced the Opening and Closing Ceremonies at the Rio Olympics 2016. His portfolio of work spans across a broad range of events including tournament ceremonies, corporate events, private parties and weddings.
