A record number of entries have been received for this year’s Dubai Lynx advertising awards, according to the organiser, however the statistics are not as positive as they appear.

The third instalment of the event, staged during a particularly challenging period for the advertising industry, has witnessed a 23 percent rise in entries to 2079, up from 1682 in 2007. These figures are slightly misleading however, as a new category added last year contributes 208 of the 397 additional entries from the first outing to this year’s.

“Despite the current economic climate, we are delighted to see growth in the number of entries from across the region,” said Steve Lane, Dubai Lynx Festival Director.

“More importantly, though, is the increase in the number of companies taking part, up nearly eight percent versus last year,” he added.

Most of this growth has occurred in the outdoor and interactive advertising categories. Worryingly for local TV production houses, the number of entries in the TV and cinema category has fallen since 2007 from 256 to 237.
