The heat is on

Digital Studio Awards may seem a long way off, now really is the time to start thinking about it

It’s that slightly chaotic time of year again. The summer heat is still gathering momentum and about half of the population of the UAE will soon disappear, at various times, for summer vacations.

This gives the summer period a distinctive pace; things feel slow but alas, work still needs to get done! It’s also important to avoid complacency: Before we know it, summer will be drawing to an end and one of the busiest periods of the year in the broadcast industry will suddenly be upon us.

Think IBC, MyContent, Dubai International Film Festival… the list goes on. The difference this year is that preparations for CABSAT and indeed the Digital Studio Awards will start much earlier than in previous years. As most of you will be aware, CABSAT has moved to January 14-16 in 2018, and so there will be less chance to gain a breather between the two traditional busy seasons in the region’s broadcast calendar.

You might be wondering what kind of direction this column is taking. It’s not so much a whinge as a reminder that while Digital Studio Awards may seem a long way off, now really is the time to start thinking about nominations. I certainly recommend that interested parties make a note of any projects or films that might be worthy contenders. Even if these projects are in progress, if they are completed by the first half of November 2017, then they can qualify for entry. Check out the nominations section of the Awards website more details.

Elsewhere in this issue, we bring you some fascinating reports, including in depth coverage of HP Inc’s event at Cannes Film Festival, where the company brought together some of the brightest minds in cinema to discuss the future of film (see p30 of the digital edition). Enjoy the issue!
