SLS Production rocks out in the desert

Complying with several different technical riders in one venue, by providing audio, lighting, backline, distro, monitors and consoles for a variety of performances throughout a music festival is a difficult challenge for even the most seasoned equipment rental supplier.

Given that SLS Production successfully achieved this task, supplying kit for two days and fourteen acts at the 2008 installment of the Dubai Desert Rock Festival, it is no surprise that the Sound and Stage Awards judges chose to recognise the company with the Best Equipment Rental Project award.

After accepting the award, SLS spokesperson Girish Yerunkar paid homage to the work of the SLS crew, and noted the significance of the annual festival for the local industry.

“Desert Rock was our by far our biggest project last year. It is normally one of the biggest productions in the entire region, depending on occasional one-off shows that may be held elsewhere,” he says.

“Projects such as the George Michael concert in Abu Dhabi are also very big jobs but you can’t usually compare these with Desert Rock because it runs so much longer, being a festival.

“So after all the hard work we are very happy and pleasantly surprised to have received the Best Rental Project award.”

Yerunkar says SLS has grown as a company over the past 12 months and is confident of growing further still over the coming 12 months despite the current economic challenges.

“It is basically business as usual for us. We are maintaining the quality of our stock and as usual, we are always looking to upgrade our stocks with any equipment we think might benefit us commercially,” he explains.

“I believe the market conditions are such that niche event companies are willing to take on any job big or small, so it can become difficult for top level companies to compete.

“I still believe we’ll see a lot of the smaller operators begin to vanish from the industry."

Sound and Stage Awards 2009 Best Equipment Rental Project runners-up:

    • Production Technology (Protec) for back-to-back Andrea Bocelli and Coldplay gigs in Abu Dhabi.
    • Igual Gulf Fireworks for the UAE National Day fireworks celebration.
