E-Vision has launched a five-channel High Definition (HD) TV service for UAE viewers, marking a milestone in UAE broadcast history.

Abu Dhabi TV HD, Luxe HD, Fashion TV HD, Showtime HD and Al Jazeera Sports HD are the channels which have so far been included in the service.

E-Vision’s HD service will be available through a new HD set top box with a 250 GB capacity and offers Personal Video Recorder (PVR) features. In addition to the $270 purchase price for a HD set top box, customers will be charged a monthly fee of US $8 to access three complementary HD channels.

The PVR feature will enable E-Vision customers to pause and rewind live TV as well as watch their programmes at their convenience. The feature will also allow customers to watch one channel while recording programmes from other channels simultaneously.

The set-top-box is also compatible with regular standard definition programming.

Showtime Cable Premier customers will be able to upgrade to a new package that includes the HD service for an additional $12 per month.

Humaid Rashid Sahoo, CEO of E-Vision stated that with HD TV sales now surpassing SD TV sales, the “move is in line with what our customers are asking for”.

“With an already large installed base of HD-ready TV sets in the UAE, the service will redefine the television experience for an increasing number of customers going forward,“ he commented.

E-Vision is also in talks with other content providers to expand its HD programming package.
