Pay TV operator Orbit Showtime Network (OSN) is to give away free Al Jazeera Sport encryption cards to new subscribers of its Platinum Extra and Premier Plus packages. Al Jazeera is the exclusive broadcaster of the FIFA World Cup, which begins in less than two weeks.

In a brief statement given to DPME.com, the network said that the offer would apply as of May 31.

The promotion could help the operator to attract new subscribers for the coming year. The network’s broadcast rights agreement for the English Premier League has expired with the Abu Dhabi Media Company assuming the rights next year. By underwriting the cost of the Al Jazeera card with the World Cup less than two weeks away OSN is hoping to leverage the tournament’s popularity as an incentive to attract customers for the longer term.
