Comic book giant Marvel Entertainment has announced the creation of a TV division to develop new productions based on its stable of characters for the small screen.

The new division will be headed by Jeph Loeb who assumes the newly created position of executive VP, head of television.

Marvel – which was recently purchased by Disney for US $4 billion – is the owner of a number of successful franchises including X-Men, Iron Man and Spider-Man.

Loeb has extensive experience of comic book writing and has also written and produced for both cinema and TV, most recently working on hit US series Heroes and Smallville.

“Marvel continues to break new ground in storytelling in both their comic book and film ventures, so, along with everyone here, I’m excited to bring the same brand of excitement into homes across the globe,” said Loeb.
