A record 40,000 people attended a concert by prolific Indian maestro Ilaiyaraaja in the emirate of Sharjah last month.

Ilaiyaraaja, who has penned 5,000 songs and 1,000 film scores, performed for four hours backed up by a 90-piece band and 10 back-up singers.

The Dubai subsidiary of Indian-based events management company, Kool Productions, brought the concert to the emirate in association with Kalaignar TV, also based in India.

C.S. Kumar, managing director of Kool Productions claimed that the concert was one of the largest productions ever staged in the Gulf region. He also promised to stage further concerts of this size in the UAE in the near future.

The show also marked a coup for Sharjah, with Ilaiyaraaja's debut UAE performance also his first outside of India for a decade.
