Each year, side by side with CABSAT, the Digital Studio Awards has also become very popular and is now a must-attend event for many industry professionals.

This year, more than ever, we felt that both international and regional companies had come to recognise the importance these awards played in acknowledging key contributors to the growth of this industry in the Middle East.

A reflection of that is the number of key sponsors we had this year as well as the number of organisations that officially acknowledged their support of this event, including the IABM, Dubai Studio City, Hitachi, United Broadcast & Media Solutions and the UK Trade & Investment.

Over the years, we have also witnessed a significant increase in the quantity as well as the quality of nominations we have received for the awards. As always, we have tried our best to acknowledge newcomers and the smaller players who have, by their creativity and innovative thinking, improved the quality of work produced by the region's industry or tried to be different from the norm.

For instance, Dubai-based company, Pink House Films walked away with the award for Best Production House of the Year while Saudi Arabian firm, First Gulf Company shared the award for Systems Integrator of the Year with long-term player, Tek Signals. Rubicon from Jordan bagged the Animation House of the Year for producing good quality animation. Rubicon's works have been acknowledged even by international players like MGM Studios with whom it is now co-producing Pink Panther & Pals.

One award that we do not give away every year is Service to the Industry. This is specifically designed for corporate and government initiatives that help the local broadcast and production industry grow. We believe that the launch of Dubai Studio City is one such initiative that has significantly upped the growth of production not just in Dubai but also in the countries around it. More international film producers are looking at Dubai, Oman and Jordan as hotspots for shooting while at the same time, this initiative will also give related industries a boost.

In the meantime, we have put up pictures of the award winners at The Gallery. More details on each of the winners will be available in the next issue of Digital Studio.
