Digital signage installations are increasing in popularity as a visual communication platfrom for retail and advertising applications at airport terminals and tradeshows. Sound & Stage takes a look at some of the key professional plasma and LCD screens on the market.

NEC Display Solutions

NEC Display Solutions introduces the new NEC MultiSync EA series as the successor to the NEC MultiSync 70 line. A benefit of the NEC MultiSync EA series is that it offers low environmental impact. The 26-inch model's EPEAT certification and carbon footprint meter offers greater transparency, with respect to the use of environmentally-friendly materials, energy efficiency and CO2 emissions.

The monitor offers 16:10 format resolution, five millisecond response time and a contrast ratio of 1000:1, as well as digital interfaces with High Definition Copy Protection (HDCP).

The design of the NEC MultiSync EA261WM is well suited for semi-professional applications within the SME and corporate business sectors.

According to NEC, the MultiSync EA261WM retains many of the technical characteristics of the NEC MultiSync 70 series as well as affordability.

For this reason, the display is ideally suited for small to medium sized enterprises utilising the screens for business applications, desktop multimedia work and document management through to more complex CAD applications.

The NEC MultiSync EA261WM boasts environmental sustainability as a key feature, with silver EPEAT accreditation for its white model and gold EPEAT certification for its black model.

To be awarded the EPEAT gold certificate, manufacturers must satisfy 23 mandatory, as well as 21 optional, criteria. Factors such as energy consumption and efficiency, use of hazardous materials, recycling, packaging and method of production all come into the EPEAT evaluation.

An additional innovation is the carbon footprint meter in the on-screen menu, which indicates the current CO2 emissions of the LCD display.

When the device is switched into EcoMode, the brightness of the display is limited to a 50% capacity. Therefore reducing the CO2 emissions of the display. In order to see the reduction in the equipments' carbon dioxide emissions, users can simply view the current measurement of the carbon footprint meter. This allows users within companies to see the contributions they have made towards acting against climate change.

The bezel is specifically designed to allow for tight assembly of several displays, including multi-monitor solutions or display-walls. This allows images to be displayed without disruption across the complete viewing surface. Recesses are also provided to allow the panel to be positioned onto a pedestal.

Sony's GXD-L52H1 LCD Display, a 52-inch LCD screen with 1920 x 1080 full HD resolution, utilises the advanced 10-bit panel to faithfully reproduce natural, smooth colour gradation and vibrant images, claims Sony. The GXD-L52H1, includes robust safety features guaranteeing reliable, semi-outdoor use. New features include an anti-dust mechanism, which allows air to be circulated inside its chassis while dismissing heat. This ensures no dust penetrates its body making it suitable for use in open environments, such as shopping malls and airport terminals, according to Sony.

The tamper-resistant front panel is made from strong glass and metal bezel that is easily replaceable, allowing for convenient panel changes when necessary.

The screen also has a 178-degree viewing angle permitting wide-angle views on its non-reflective surface. It also maintains the same lifespan in either portrait or landscape installations, with no burn-ins even during 24/7 operation.

The built-in LAN connectivity allows for control and monitoring of several displays networked across a property by a single operator. In addition, the lack of external air holes enables the LCD display to be flush-mounted. The display can be quickly changed from landscape to portrait mode providing flexibility in installation options.

To build on the launch of its 103-inch consumer plasma display during GITEX 2007, Panasonic utilised InfoComm 2008 to reveal the new TH-103PF10UK, 103-inch 1080p full-HD professional plasma display.

The latest member of the 10-Series line of plasmas, the TH-103PF10UK, includes enhanced display technology and professional presentation capabilities, and a 100,000 hour service life, backed by Panasonic's three year warranty and after-sales "Plasma Concierge Service".

The giant 10-Series 103-inch model, includes configurability for commercial video wall environments, updated video processing technology, enhanced wireless presentation capabilities, versatile plug-in card functionality as well as dual HDMI functionality.

For commercial video wall environments, the TH-103PF10UK provides native support for display configurations of up to 5x5, the largest of any plasma display currently available on the market, according to Panasonic.

A new Portrait Zoom feature facilitates the display of a single horizontal image across three vertically-mounted 103-inch plasmas for a total display area of more than 93 sq ft.

The new video processing technology delivers a sharper image when displaying low resolution content, or when zooming in on an image in video wall applications, Panasonic claims.

An Anti-Reflective coating helps reduce visible reflections in environments where exterior or interior light can lead to unwanted reflections and a reduced image quality.

The 10-Series 103-inch plasma display enhances corporate and educational presentation environments when used in conjunction with the company's optional TY-FB10WPU Wireless Presentation Module.

As with all other 10-Series models (ranging from 37-inches upward), the 103-inch, when paired with the wireless presentation module, provides PC to Plasma WiFi connectivity.
