German lens manufacturer CW Sonderoptic has named production industry veteran Rainer Hercher as general sales director for its Leica-branded cine products.
A sister company to Leica Camera, CW Sonderoptic GmbH designs and manufactures premium products for the film and television production industry, including the Leica Summilux-C and Leica Summicron-C cine lenses.
“Rainer brings a rare depth of experience and understanding of the global cinematography market that is invaluable for growing our business,” said Gerhard Baier, managing director of CW Sonderoptic. “He will be responsible for managing the sales and distribution of our lenses and other cine products worldwide and will be instrumental to growing our brand in the years to come.”
Hercher’s career began behind the lens as a broadcast cameraman in the 1990s before he opened the Berlin-based rental house Camelot Broadcast Services in 1997. Since then he has worked in management roles at both Band Pro Munich and Codex Digital before joining CW Sonderoptic.
Hercher said: “The Leica brand has a rich history of creating fantastic image-making tools, but the cinema side of the business from CW Sonderoptic is relatively new. Although they have quickly gained a strong reputation, I look forward to introducing them to more cinematographers and directors in the global market.”
