Actor Leonardo DiCaprio has finally won his first Oscar at the 88th Academy Awards, having been nominated six times previously.

Accepting his best actor award for gritty drama 'The Revenant', DiCaprio said in his speech: "Let us not take our planet for granted. I do not take tonight for granted."

DiCaprio received a standing ovation as he picked up the award, while the film's director, Alejandro Inarritu, also took home a gong, receiving the best director Oscar for the survival epic.
