Dubai Opera will launch with a concert by legendary Spanish tenor and conductor Plácido Domingo.

The city's first purpose-built, multi-format performing arts theatre in Downtown Dubai, which is due to open in Autumn 2016, revealed the news alongside a series of other details regarding their first season of programmes.

Described as the ‘King of Opera,’ Domingo has performed over 4,000 times and in 147 roles. His appearance at the new venue will be followed by historic opera The Pearl Fishers, which was first performed in 1863 and tells the story of two men’s promise of eternal friendship that is tested by their love for the same woman.

The schedule at the much-anticipated new opera house includes everything from ballet and classical performances through to musicals and theatre, comedy, rock, pop and jazz shows.

"Dubai Opera is bringing a spectacular calendar of performances, from defining operas to exhilarating ballets and compelling classical music in our opening year," CEO Jasper Hope said in a statement. "The line-up of performances will be a revelation for culture-lovers in the city."

The masterpiece comedy by Gioachino Rossini, The Barber of Seville is also on the agenda, as well as Giselle, which will be performed by The Russian State Ballet and Orchestra of Siberia.

Opera Without Words, an evening of Italian Opera’s greatest overtures and interludes performed by Fondazione Teatro Lirico Giuseppe Verdi, Trieste and conducted by Francesco Quattrocchi will also be staged.

Proving there is something for everyone, The Russian State Ballet and Orchestra of Siberia, will stage Coppelia, a family ballet about an eccentric toymaker who has built a life-sized doll, Coppélia, and daydreams of her coming to life.

Further entertainment comes from the Mozart Gala performed by Vienna Concert Verein followed by Postcards from Vienna and Impossible, which features the world’s best illusionists live on stage.

Dubai Opera will also welcome renowned Catalan tenor, José Carreras, who celebrates ‘A Life in Music,’ with his final world tour. One of the three tenors along with Domingo and Luciano Pavarotti, Carreras is highly acclaimed for his performances in the operas of Verdi and Puccini.

The music fest continues with Emirati singer Hussain Al Jassmi, followed by Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons featuring Fabio Biondi and Europa Galante, Spain’s foremost Flamenco superstar, Sara Baras, and sitar player and composer Anoushka Shankar.

Audiences can also watch the acclaimed show, The Nutcracker on Ice featuring the Imperial Ice Stars, while multi-award winning international sensation, Slava’s Snowshow will come to Dubai Opera over the festive season.
