Al Mamlaka - independent public news channel launches in Jordan

The independent station called Al Mamlaka ("the Kingdom") will begin broadcast on July 16.

Jordan will get a new public news TV channel that shall begin broadcasting on July 16. The station called Al Mamlaka ("the Kingdom") was announced on Saturday in Amman in a press statement.

The news channel will be based at the King Hussein Business Park in Amman, and the statement said the TV station's website will also go live on the same day. On Saturday, the news station launch was accompanied by a promotional campaign in the streets of Amman. The HD channel will be broadcasting via the Nilesat 201 satellite.

The statement added that Jordanians can expect an "advanced and qualitative leap with more freedom and professionalism", in comparison with other broadcasters.

The broadcaster will be supervised by Fahed Khitan who is the chairperson of the board of directors. The station has attracted experienced Jordanian staff with wide-ranging experience including stints at broadcasters abroad. Senior journalists from local newspapers and media outlets will according to the statement.

Plans for the Al Mamlaka station were announced in a Royal Decree issued on July 10, 2015, appointing the independent station's chairperson and members of the board of directors. In 2015, the government reportedly allocated JD10 million over a two-year period to fund the channel.

Under the provisions of Article 4 of 2015 the Independent Media by-law, Under the decree, Al Ghad's columnist and former editor-in-chief of Al Arab Al Yawm Arabic daily Fahed Khitan was named as chairman of the station. Ayman Safadi, Marwan Jumaa, Nart Buran and Bassem Tweisi were also appointed as board members.
