Viu to continue operating on freemium model

South East Asian OTT service provider Viu currently operates on a freemium model, and will continue to do so until it finds a viable means of balancing the paid and free content.

Wesam Kattan, VP content, Viu said: “Today most of the Arabic content is being commissioned on a free-to-air basis. If we were to acquire or license that content it’s going to be difficult to put it behind a pay wall and ask our audience to pay when it was previously available for free.

“On the broadcaster side a lot of the producers, unfortunately, put their premium content on YouTube as well. We’re not going to ask them to pay for something that has been widely available for free.”

Eventually, Viu will be moving into a balance where its premium content offering is going to increase at a far larger scale than where it is today.

“But until we reach that threshold, where we have a viable content proposition for our Middle East audience, our free offering is going to be substantial,” he added.
