Capacitance Electronic Discs (CED) were developed by phonograph specialists RCA. They played both video and audio using a similar analogue and needle approach to a phonograph. They could handle 60 minutes of NTSC video on each side. After 17 years of research they hit the market in 1981 and were practically defunct from the outset thanks to the development of videotape formats. The first letterbox format home video was distributed on CED in 1984.
